Pico do Areeiro
Pico do Areeiro is one of Madeira’s most breathtaking locations, where towering mountains seem to plunge directly into the sea. Visiting on a clear day is an unforgettable experience, offering panoramic views that stretch from the jagged peaks all the way down to the ocean.
Occasionally, nature puts on a unique show: when the clouds are low, you find yourself standing literally above them, feeling as though you've traveled to a different world—though witnessing this "sea of clouds" does require a bit of luck with the weather. Due to its sheer magnificence, it is a favorite spot for watching the sunrise or sunset, moments when the light transforms the landscape into something truly magical.
A Cozy Stopover: Abrigo do Pastor & Abrigo do Poiso
On your way up to Pico do Areeiro, take a moment to stop and recharge. We highly recommend two iconic spots known for their warm hospitality: Abrigo do Pastor and Abrigo do Poiso.
These locations are famous for their rustic, cozy atmosphere; on cooler days, you’ll find the fireplaces crackling, making them the perfect mountain refuge. If you stop at Abrigo do Pastor, don't miss the chance to try their famous "Carne de Vinha d'Alhos" sandwich (marinated pork)—one of our island’s most traditional and beloved flavors. It’s the perfect fuel before you reach the summit!

Fanal Forestry Park: A Mystical Wonderland
Fanal is, without a doubt, one of the most magical and enigmatic places in Madeira. Part of the ancient Laurissilva Forest (a UNESCO World Heritage site), this park is famous for its centuries-old Til trees (Ocotea foetens), whose twisted, dramatic shapes look like something straight out of a fairy tale.
The true charm of Fanal reveals itself on foggy days. The atmosphere becomes mystical, silent, and deeply serene. It is the perfect spot for a peaceful walk, to breathe in the pure mountain air, and for photography enthusiasts to capture surreal, otherworldly images. Be prepared: here, time seems to stand still.

Taberna da Poncha & The Mountain Route
The "Taberna da Poncha" (in Serra de Água) is one of the most iconic and authentic spots to taste Poncha, Madeira’s traditional drink. However, the real star of this journey is the road itself.
This route, connecting the south to the north of the island, offers some of Madeira’s most breathtaking scenery. You will find yourself surrounded by majestic, towering mountains on both sides, creating a dramatic landscape where the cliffs seem to "loom" over the road. Along the way, you will pass through the island’s longest tunnel, carved deep into the rock, leading you to São Vicente—a place where steep peaks and lush greenery are your constant companions.
Pro Tip: Poncha is delicious but has a very high alcohol content. Please enjoy responsibly, especially if you are driving!

Closest Hiking Trail: Levada da Azenha
This trail is located just a 10-minute drive from the Reis Magos View apartment. You will find free parking spaces conveniently located along the main road near the trailhead.
The majority of the path is flat and easy to walk. Only the final stretch features a slightly steeper incline near the historic Vitória Mill. Along the slope, you’ll spot pine and eucalyptus trees, as well as the iconic Bird of Paradise flowers. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to a beautiful panoramic view of Caniço and its surroundings.
